The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
